Developing a usable secret management application is a balancing act between functionality and attack surface. An understanding of security must be aligned with an understanding of practical workflows.

Vault developers tackle this problem daily on behalf of their users. However, anyone with secrets to protect can benefit from thinking like a Vault developer, even if they have delegated actual secret management to Vault.

In a layered approach accessible to security novices and experts alike, we will explore the ways in which the Vault team thinks about security; the secure introduction problem; security principles encoded into Vault; and finally, how Vault combines these security principles into functionality being used by Nomad to enable secure introduction and secret management at scale.
