In this video I will demonstrate the preparation of carbon disulfide from acetylene and sulfur.
To generate the acetylene I added water to calcium carbide via addition funnel. The amounts of both the calcium carbide and the sulfur were eyeballed, so that I had enough acetylene to use up all the sulfur. The acetylene gas was passed through some concentrates sulfuric acid to dry it and remove some of the impurities. The sulfur was melted and heated to the boiling point after which acetylene was passed though it. It is important to displace all the air from the apparatus before heating, otherwise it can explode.
Soon dark colored liquid started to distill over (the flask with the sulfur was equipped with a downwards condenser). The apparatus should be connected to a trap to catch any toxic fumes that comes off. The production of acetylene was continued until nothing more distilled over and then the apparatus was left to cool down before opening to avoid spontaneous ignition.
The distillate was redistilled, resulting in pure CS2, bp 4446℃.
