China is expanding its naval bases on the tropical island of Hainan in the South China Sea. Two of Beijing’s most important naval facilities, Yulia and Longpo, have undergone dramatic expansion to accommodate a growing fleet of vessels and to provide a home for China’s new seaborne nuclear deterrent.

WSJ spoke to defense analysts who say the upgrades point to Beijing’s preparations for a possible conflict over Taiwan.
