Rome Total War: Barbarian Invasion is NO DOUBT one of the most insane and hard core Total War campaigns of all time, and certainly took that prize when it released and arguably only lost it once its spiritual sequel, Total War Attila, inherited its place. But Barbarian Invasion still stands tall today, almost 20 years later, as one of the most innovative, charming, intense and dynamic Total War campaigns of all time.

I thought it was time to take a look back at this expansion, to see why it was so great to begin with, and why it holds such a special place in my heart. Barbarian Invasion does take place in that late antiquity era of course, and since we have not just one, but two Roman factions in the game, well, it's not hard for me to love it based on that fact alone. But should you play Total War Rome: Barbarian Invasion in 2023? Remastered version or not? That's what we're here to find out.
