Navrongo: This travel documentary will change your mind about visiting Navrongo. It will not only show you the beauty of Navrongo but also serve as a travel guide and a wellcurated itinerary for my trip to the KassenaNankana district capital.

For me, Navrongo is one of the major communities in the Upper East region of Ghana that seems so far away that many Ghanaians haven't really bothered to explore. Navrongo is rich in culture, history, and landmarks that showcase its vibrant spirit.

I arrived in Navrongo late in the morning. The atmosphere was bustling, and I took my bucket list for my journey. Unfortunately, I forgot to add food, so my stomach began protesting.

To have a calm mind to experience Navrongo, I asked the tricycle riders around where I could get indigenous Navrongo food.

I was directed to a nearby chop bar, where I ordered TZ and bitter leaf soup. After finishing eating, I decided to kick off my tour at the famous Navrongo Cathedral, built with mud in the late 19th century.

More details about the cathedral will be added later on in the video. However, since the Navrongo market wasn't far, I began my "Visit Navrongo Experience" there.

I strolled in the market and immersed myself in the people to learn how they trade and relate to each other. I also got to know that Navrongo has two markets, old and new.

The new market, as demarcated by the District Assembly, is less than a minute away from the old market.

I wish I could spend the whole day here. The smiles of the market women, the chitchat, and the bargaining buyers gave me a different perspective. Moreover, whether in the old market or the new market, there is something for you.

In Navrongo, English is the official language, but the natives speak two languages: Kasem and Nankani. The Fao festival is the biggest event and is celebrated by the people of Navrongo and its environs as a major Thanksgiving celebration to commemorate the end of the farming season and to thank the gods and ancestors for the provision of adequate rains throughout the crop season. The festival also affords the people the opportunity to show gratitude to their ancestors for their protection over the period.

My next stop was at the Navrongo Cathedral, built with mud. It was established in 1906 by 13 French Fathers with the construction of four huts, one of which was the chapel. In 1910, a much larger chapel was constructed, but it became too small and not as prestigious as expected by the Fathers. They managed to convince their hierarchy and raise sufficient funding to build what remained for very long the oldest Catholic building in Ghana. Entirely built of mud bricks and pastered with mud mortar, the cathedral is 60m long and 14m wide, and its bell tower is 13m high. Originally, the roof was flat, following the local pattern, but it was later replaced with a pitched corrugated iron sheet roof (1928). Even though maintenance and repairs have been done, the cathedral has not changed very much.

Closer to the cathedral is the Navrongo Basilica Museum. A place where you can get details and collections about the Catholic Mission.

Away from there, I headed to Tono Dam, one of the largest agricultural dams in West Africa. This dam covers about 2 kilometers and supplies over 2,490 hectares of farmland. Its construction started in 1975 and was completed in 1985. Aside from irrigational purposes, the dam also supplies portable water to neighboring communities, including the regional capital, Bolgatanga.

I was amazed at the serene environment and the grazing of cattle. I saw the herdsman crossing with the cattle at a section where I also decided to follow them, but unfortunately, this is what I said to myself.

It was an incredible experience, and I wish I could do that again and again. However, as the day made way for the evening, I wanted to get a feel for the nightlife in Navrongo, so I lodged at the Savanna Plaza Hotel.

I loved everything I experienced in the KassenaNankana district capital: the food, the transport, the markets, and the tourist attractions.

My childhood dream came true, and I hope this inspires and motivates you to also visit Navrongo someday. I will be back to witness the Fao Festival until then. See you on my next video.
