Onboard a Thomas Cook 757200 from Bodrum (Turkey) back home to Gatwick after a weeks holiday down there.
The aircraft arrived inbound from Gatwick late, so I figured we'd be late leaving anyway. However when we boarded the aircraft we were informed of the reason & the ongoing problem by the captain, who explained that the APU (or small motor that powers the aircraft while the engines are off) had failed. This was the reason for the late arrival from Gatwick. Left without power, a ground power unit was summoned to provide the aircraft with enough power to start the engines. In the meantime the cabin air conditioning was off and all the lights in the cabin were off and the temperature inside was hot to say the least! Then the ground power unit failed to connect to our aircraft & kept tripping the electricity through the plane. This caused a nav in the flight deck to need resetting. Eventually after gaining enough of a continuous current from ground power to start engine 2, we pushed back and remained on the taxiway for a further 1520mins while the pilots reset the computers. Finally engine 1 come to life and we taxied to the runway about 80/85 minutes late. So a rather problematic departure to say the least. However the rest of the flight went smoothly and we made up about 20 minutes and landed just over an hour behind scheduled. The pilots told us they had requested more direct waypoints from ATC giving us a clearer, more direct route across Europe to make some time up.

I quite like a bit of drama, makes the ride a bit more exciting! I did chuckle when the captain was explaining that the APU had failed he referred to it as a little engine which wasn't working. By calling it "an engine" certainly panicked a few nervous flyers around me! Haha. Anyway the rest of the flight went smoothly as you can see! Fantastic sound on take off so certainly turn up the volume when we line up!!!
