Annie Pilates Physical Therapist

Hello Pilates Lovers!
As requested by one of my viewers, here is a video discussing a treatment plan for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome,. What is Thoracic outlet syndrome? it is a group of disorders that occur when blood vessels or nerves in the space between your collarbone and your first rib (thoracic outlet) are compressed. This can cause pain in your shoulders and neck and numbness in your fingers.

Common causes of thoracic outlet syndrome include physical trauma from a car accident, repetitive injuries from job or sportsrelated activities, certain anatomical defects (such as having an extra rib), and pregnancy. Sometimes doctors can't determine the cause of thoracic outlet syndrome.I discussed the anatomy, function of the muscles surrounding the outlet, the 3 special tests on how to determine if you have this syndrome, 3 gentle stretching and 3 simple strengthening program. I also discussed the muscles the scalenes, and pectoralis major and minor , how posture affects the syndrome and how to correct yourself with the proper form and movement
How is thoracic outlet syndrome treated?
Early identification of TOS can help improve the success of treatment. Thoracic outlet syndrome treatments vary, depending on the type of TOS you have and your symptoms. The goals of treatment are to reduce symptoms and pain. Your health care provider will recommend the treatment that is right for you and if these exercises are safe to perform but there are other options
Before choosing any treatment, it is important to talk to your health care provider about the potential benefits, risks and side effects of your treatment
Treatment of neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome
Physical therapy: The most common initial treatment for neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome is physical therapy. increases the range of motion of the neck and shoulders, strengthens muscles and promotes better posture. Most patients experience an improvement in symptoms after undergoing therapy.
Medications: For pain relief, overthecounter pain medications, such as aspirin, acetaminophen or ibuprofen may be recommended. Your doctor may prescribe a muscle relaxant for additional pain relief.
Surgery: In some cases, surgery may be needed to treat neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome if symptoms continue, despite an optimal course of physical therapy.
Hoping that surgery will be the last result, at least try these gentle exercises and as you add the other posture series

Here are other Posture Series for neck and upper back that i suggested to help your thoracic outlet syndrome, hand in hand with these daily corrective exercises to see results.
