What is thyroid Cancer? Thyroid cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the thyroid gland, which is a butterflyshaped gland located at the base of the neck. This gland plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism by producing hormones that control heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and weight. Thyroid cancer begins when cells in the thyroid gland undergo genetic changes (or mutations). These mutations allow the cells to grow and multiply rapidly. The abnormal cells lose the ability to die, as normal cells would, and accumulate to form a tumor, which may eventually invade nearby tissues or spread to other parts of the body. There are several types of thyroid cancer, each with distinct characteristics.
