Tiger cubs playing with their father at Burgers' Zoo Arnhem The Netherlands

Being predominantly solitary animals, male tigers have always been regarded by biologists and scientists as a major threat for young, recently born tiger cubs. It is true that male tigers often seem to lose interest in females after mating has taken place and several killings of young tiger cubs by male tigers have been recorded as well. However, recent scientific insights seem to indicate that male tigers do play a role in the lives of their cubs after their birth. In Royal Burgers' Zoo (Arnhem, The Netherlands) the male tiger shows affective and caring behaviour towards his twin cubs after being reintroduced to them very carefully and wellmonitored.
