TIPS for a Creative Habit

Focused Intentionality that phrase helps me decide where I want to focus my attention. As an artist working in a variety of mediums, I sometimes jump from one thing to another. That can be fun at times, but it really doesn't help me grow as much as taking the time to FOCUS on one or two things at a time for a set period of time. During April, my focus was to draw or paint everyday and to prioritize my time to allow for that. When I was in Florida, the focus was a pen drawing of a scene that intimidated me. It could be a focus on finding the pattern of light in a composition, simplifying the scene...it's unending.

Finding ways to make things more appealing and inviting to come back to can help the daily habit. By drawing off the spread of two pages at a time and giving yourself permission to just work for a small time each day can lead to great things. It's amazing how starting on a small area can then lead to working on more. Sometimes just getting started is what you need.

Working with a similar palette every time helps too. You get comfortable and confident with the color selections and the learning curve lessons each time. Give it a try. My current favorite palette and took kit is listed below:

My Favorite MINI Watercolor Kit – Many of these items are optional, but this is my favorite collection of supplies I currently carry everywhere I go. Once you begin your journey to create “on the go,” you will figure out what you need to have in your kit.
Journal of choice and size varies, but most are watercolor paper 140lb. (Moleskine, Pentalic, Strathmore…)
Water Brush – Large Pente
Limited Palette in small tin (four ½ pans with magnets)
o Perylene Red (Daniel Smith)
o Hansa Yellow Med. (Daniel Smith)
o French Ultramarine (Daniel Smith)
o Burnt Sienna (Daniel Smith)
Convenience Colors limited palette
o Quinacridone Opera (Holbein) or Quinacridone Magenta (QOR)
o Dioxazine Purple (QOR) or (M. Graham)
o Peacock Blue (Mission)
o Quinacridone Gold (QOR) or New Gamboge (Daniel Smith)
Atomizer or small spray bottle
Pens
o Uniball EYE Micro or Fine– waterproof black
o Micron 005 black
o Uniball Signo – WHITE gel pen
o Elegant Writer – black Calligraphy pen
Mechanical pencil (or your choice)
Eraser – Kneaded
Paper Towels or something absorbent
Index cards – test colors and practice strokes
Pipette – to fill brush
Clip magnets for each palette
SafeT Compass (optional)
Small magnifying glass (optional)
White gouache (optional)
Freezer paper (optional)to protect journal pages.
Tape (optional) masking, washi, or painters (create border edges)
