I'm on a mission to get people to try line and wash with dip pens and in this film I share a few tips about getting the most out of this expressive and creative way of working. Sure, you can grab a micron / fineliner pen, after all they are super convenient, but wouldn't it be nice to use a pen which is full of character and brings so much more to the party? This is rather longer than my usual tips, but a few folk have been asking for a tutorial, so here it is!

I give a few examples and then draw and paint a dodo (I adore dodos, and it would be perfect for day 24 of Inktober 2021 = extinct). I use a couple of metal nibs in holders and a glass dip pen. Glass dip pens are a revelation if you have never used them. They can be works of art in their own right or a bit more basic and do not have to be expensive. After the drawing, I add washes of watercolour to my bird to bring it to life. If only we could do that with the dodo....

During the film I give pointers on pen and wash in general. My philosophy is that the line and wash should add up to more than the separate parts. I do not want to colour my drawing in or outline my painting, I want the line to play on the paper with the colour.
