The Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) plays a unique role within your overall ERAS application.
International medical graduates will want to insist their medical schools prepare MSPE's on their behalf, and not just the dean's letter. The MSPE replaced the dean's letter several years ago as the preferred option. Additionally, you will want to insist your MSPE includes all relevant information. Particularly, you will want to ensure it includes each of your clinical rotations and each evaluation you received following each rotation.
Many candidates are given the opportunity to draft what the medical school will provide in the unique characteristics section.
The MSPE is specifically your medical school's evaluation of you as a medical student at their school. Therefore, it should be limited to only what you did as a medical student at that medical school.
Accomplishments from prior to medical school, after medical school, or unrelated to medical school should not be included in the unique characteristics section. This section should therefore also be limited to what the medical school would have firsthand knowledge of.
When drafting your unique characteristics description, be specific and concise, provide details, and write it in the third person from the medical school's point of view.
