Adam Fields DC

Time to take care of your TMJ with little to no risk of a flare up. This is a great video for those of you who have myofascial trigger points or have been challenged by other TMJ Exercises. You will learn, and practice, massage for your lateral pterygoid, medial pterygoid and masseter muscles. This can help with jaw pain relief, bruxing relief and even ear issues like tinnitus and eustachian tube dysfunction.

Intraoral massage is a targeted therapeutic approach that addresses the intricate network of muscles involved in jaw movement, including the masseter, temporalis, lateral pterygoid, and medial pterygoid muscles. These muscles play crucial roles in chewing, speaking, and overall jaw function, making them prime targets for alleviating symptoms of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder or TMD. By specifically targeting these muscles through intraoral massage, therapists can help relieve tension, reduce pain, and improve mobility in individuals experiencing TMJrelated discomfort.

The lateral pterygoid muscle, situated deep within the jaw, is particularly important in controlling the movement of the temporomandibular joint. Dysfunction or tightness in this muscle can contribute to TMJ symptoms such as clicking or popping sounds, as well as difficulty opening or closing the mouth smoothly. Intraoral massage techniques can effectively address tension and trigger points within the lateral pterygoid, promoting relaxation and restoring optimal function to the TMJ.

Similarly, the medial pterygoid muscle, located on the inner surface of the jaw, works in conjunction with the masseter to facilitate chewing and jaw movement. Tightness or imbalances in the medial pterygoid can result in jaw pain, stiffness, and limited range of motion. Through targeted intraoral massage, therapists can release tension in the medial pterygoid and surrounding tissues, helping to alleviate TMJ symptoms and improve overall jaw function.

The masseter muscle, positioned on the sides of the jaw, is one of the primary muscles involved in chewing and clenching. Excessive tension or overactivity in the masseter can contribute to TMJ pain, headaches, and muscle soreness. Intraoral massage techniques, including gentle pressure and myofascial release, can effectively address trigger points and muscular tightness in the masseter, promoting relaxation and reducing discomfort associated with TMJ disorder. By targeting the lateral pterygoid, medial pterygoid, and masseter muscles through intraoral massage, therapists can provide targeted relief for individuals experiencing TMJrelated symptoms, ultimately improving jaw function and overall quality of life.
