Dork in the Road

Recently, while looking up some used dual sport motorcycle values on Kelly Blue Book's site, I stumbled across an article there listing the top 10 Dual Sport Motorcycles in terms of search volume and traffic on their site. Curious, I checked out this list to see how many of what I consider the best dual sport motorcycles made the list. So many of my favorite dual sport bikes were there that I just had to make this video talking about each of these best dual sport bikes and why I thought each of them was so popular.

#10: Kawasaki KLX250
Since replaced by the KLX300, the classic KLX250 got a major upgrade with fuel injection in 2018, and was generally considered one of the most capable of the 250class Japanese dual sport motorcycles thanks to its fullyadjustable suspension.
Typical Listing Price: $3900$4400

#9: Yamaha TW200
In my opinion, the TW200 is easily the most charming and unique bike on this list. Basically unchanged for the last 30+ years, the TW200 is one of the most unintimidating bikes for new riders thanks to its low seat height, manageable power, and wide ATVstyle tires that offer a buttload of traction.
Typical Listing Price: $3600$4000

#8: Yamaha WR250R
Sadly now discontinued, the WR250R was easily the most capable of the 250class Japanese dual sports with more power and better suspension than most of its competitors. It also comes with a higher price than other 250cc dual sports, making it the most expensive 250cc bike on this list.
Typical Listing Price: $4900$5800

#7: Honda XR650L
The XR650L was first introduced in 1993 and like the TW200 has not changed much at all over the past few decades. It’s a popular, simple, and reliable dual sport bike for those who want to travel more comfortably at highway speeds, but still have the ability to tear up logging roads and trails on the way to a sweet campsite.
Typical Listing Price: $5600$5900

#6: Suzuki DR650S
Very similar to the XR650L in terms of capability and ability to do highway miles and off road shenanigans well, the DR650 is another carbureted, unkillable dinosaur that has been popular for decades and is very easy to find on the used market.
Typical Listing Price: $5000$5700

#5: Yamaha XT250
The XT250 is one of the most beginner friendly bikes on this list thanks to its low seat height and lighter weight than the other 250cc dual sports. It’s also fuel injected and inexpensive, making it a great choice for a first dual sport motorcycle.
Typical Listing Price: $3900$4600

#4: Suzuki DRZ400SM
It kinda surprises me to find this one on this list, just while the SM is technically a dual sport, the supermoto setup is really far more streetriding focused. With smaller wheels, better brakes, and different gearing than the off road S model, the DRZ400Sm is a preferred bike for street and city hooligans everywhere.
Typical Listing Price: $5600$6200

#3: Suzuki DRZ400S
And coming in just ahead of its streetfocused brother is the tried and true DRZ400S. In production (and mostly unchanged) since 2000, the DRZ400S is one of the most popular dual sport bikes of all time because it’s reliable, super capable off road, and has enough power to cruise comfortably(ish) at highway or freeway speeds.
Typical Listing Price: $5100$5600

#2: Honda CRF250L
I’m not at all surprised to find the 250L near the top of this list. It’s the most popular 250cc bike at KBB.com for good reason. I started riding off road on one and it was the perfect beginner dual sport bike for me. I had a ton of amazing adventures on it and I’m sad that it is no longer in my garage.
Typical Listing Price: $4300$5300

#1: Kawasaki KLR650
Somehow, I’m both totally and not at all surprised to find the venerable, classic KLR at the top of this list of most popular dual sport motorcycles. It’s a very versatile and longlasting bike that people have ridden for millions of miles on all kinds of adventures all over the world.
Typical Listing Price: $4400$5300
