1 look for the glow. Best way to do this is with the sun in front. But go both directions for different perspective.
2 look for texture/luster
3 look at the shapes
4 look for colors
5 bring water boots/shoes
6 flashlights are great to check transparency
7 steel knife for scratch testing or use a quartz rock which you know is 7 hardness to check for softer material
8 rock hammer, screwdriver, chisel, garden rake are great for extracting specimens
9 don't forget to pack some snacks and water
10 bring something to carry rocks
11 if you leave your squirt bottle, use your bucket to scoop some water and toss it onto the dry/dirty rocks
12 bring a rock and mineral id book, of your area, with you to help with the unknowns...big help!
