Many patients come to me with complaints of foamy or bubbly urine. They say whenever we pass urine in the commode the urine appears bubbly or foamy what is the cause and what should we do? The answer is the most common cause for foamy or bubbly urine is dehydration. This is especially true in summers when the patient has inadequate water intake the urine becomes concentrated and appears to be foamy or bubbly. There are other causes of foamy or bubbly urine also like excess leakage of protein in the urine or urinary tract infections. So these causes have to be diagnosed based on tests and these tests are urine tests sometimes an ultrasound and sometimes urinary protein excretion estimation has to be done and once the cause is known the treatment can be given but remember most of the time foamy or bubbly urine is a benign harmless condition which usually goes with good fluid intake.
