In the video we discussed what exercises we recommend for true classic stenosis which is a mechanical limitations of the lumbar spine often in lumbar extension. Patients who have a difficult time standing and walking and feel better when you're sitting or lying on their back with your knees bent are the most typical patients with lumbar stenosis. The goal is exercises are to increase the room around the nerve as it exits the spinal canal. Patients who suffer from disc degeneration of the lumbar spine and degenerative joint disease in the lumbar spine can develop stenosis. Lumbar Stenosis can be related to a large or detached herniate disc which can cause of narrowing around the lumbar nerved roots. We discuss my top exercises for lumbar stenosis in this video.I first start with patients doing knees to chest in the a nonweightbearing position that is typically less stressful and safer for the patient until you see the reaction to the exercise. If the patient feels he or she is benefiting andhas not regressed we have him do lumbar flexion in sitting or standing which is more stressful but often necessary to see improvements in the patient's condition. None of these exercises should ever increase your pain.. Occasionally you'll experience 3 to 5 minutes of slightly increased symptoms but they should resolve quickly if it is the right exercise or movement for your back condition. If they don't stop the exercises. It is very important that you understand where your pain starts prior to starting the exercise. For example if you have pain down to your knees on both legs I signed of the exercise is not correct for you. If you perform the exercises and the pain starts moving out of your thighs into your butt up or lower back and is no longer in your thighs that is a good sign that the exercise is the correct one for you. It is very common to have pain at the stretch.. As I said before it should not last longer than 3 to 5 minutes after completion of the exercise. Even if you got the diagnosis of stenosis it may not be correct and continuing to do these exercises may lead to a worsening of your condition. When doing these exercises did other directions like lumbar extension or so I've been exercises. You should only perform this one stretch for approximately 3 to 5 days to see the results. If you perform other stretches they may so far the effect of each other. In addition we won't know what stretch improved or worsens your condition.
