The United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program (SFTI program), more popularly known as TOPGUN, teaches fighter and strike tactics and techniques to selected naval aviators and naval flight officers, who return to their operating units as surrogate instructors.
It began as the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School, established on 3 March 1969, at the former Naval Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California. Among the original instructors was a small group of Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm Air Warfare Instructor's (AWI), who helped to write, and setup the first courses. Among these British officers was the legendary Richard 'Dick' Lord.
In 1996, the school was merged into the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center at Naval Air Station Fallon, Nevada

This classic documentary, produced in the late 1980's, takes a close look at the real 'Top Guns' and their exciting world of a U.S Naval Aviator.
Included are numerous interviews from then serving U.S Navy fighter pilots, as well as interviews with aircrew who fought in the Vietnam War, including the U.S. Navy's only 'Ace' of that conflict, Randy 'Duke' Cunningham.
So sit back and enjoy a trip back to the 80's to see the mighty Grumman F14 'Tomcat' in all its glory.
