I recommend setting the Youtube resolution to higher than your viewing resolution, compression really hurts this vid.

I put this together on short notice in about 3 weeks. It's not as wellplanned as my other stuff, and some of the experimentation is kinda shallow. I worked pretty tirelessly in After Effects, trying to come up with ways to beatsync without just repeating the same transformations.

As always, please share this vid with everybody in your life because I don't have a lot of followers and this will only get about 1,000 views if people don't post share it around.

There are also project files, which include the After Effects project, as well as some of the 720p footage proxies.

–– Thoughts & Details [ ʏᴏᴜ ᴄᴏᴜʟᴅ ʜᴀᴠᴇ ᴍᴀᴅᴇ ᴛʜɪs ᴠɪᴅ ?! ] ––
Produced at 1440p 60 FPS, 2160p is upscaled for extra Youtube bandwidth
Footage was recorded at 2560x2560 so it could be rotated
Everything was recorded on the same setup as Acid Interstate V3, go check the description of that vid for those details

I got the idea for this video while playing around in After Effects. I found that the "Lighten" and "Darken" mixmodes, which simply take the lightest/darkest color from 2 overlayed pixels, work really well with identical concentrically rotated layers of footage. These are commutative mixmodes, so uniform concentric rotations produce really neat radially symmetric images.

I started out by messing with clips of Acid Interstate V3. I rerecorded V3 without any of the tracks or torchbeats. Additionally, I recorded 3 other segments of footage, each were about 2,000 blocks, in the same style as V3, just with different terrain. I put all the footage through the same postprocessing filters as V3, and this entire video is composed of just those 4 pieces of processed footage.

I favored the Lighten mixmode, as the Darken mixmode generally kills a lot of the distinguishable detail with only a small number of layers. This is specific to the type of footage I was working with though, and I can imagine situations where the reverse would be true.

I am fairly certain everything in this video can be extended to 360°, so a VR edition might be on the way. Stay tuned.
