The 2024 Toyota HiLux midsize ute is taking a step into the electrified future. No, it hasn't adopted a 'full' hybrid system like most other Toyota models. Instead, it's debuted 48V mildhybrid technology, which the Japanese brand calls VActive. So, fuel consumption is lowered, but not by as much as you may expect.
Under the bonnet, the HiLux VActive is powered by the series' familiar 2.8litre turbodiesel fourcylinder engine, which continues to produce 150kW of power and 500Nm of torque, despite the addition of mild hybridisation. Rather, the headline number is the 10 per cent improvement to fuel efficiency.
But, of course, there's more to the HiLux VActive story than just how much diesel it does or doesn't use. In this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Marcus Craft spends a week with the highspec Rogue 4x4 dualcab pickup to find out if the hybridisation has gone far enough.
