A friend wanted to take his 4x2 Amarok offroad to learn the capabilities of his vehicle. I thought this would be a good chance to see which vehicle would do better offroad.

We headed out to Grabouw 4x4 Trail where we took on the 4x2/AWD trail sponsored by Subaru Somerset. To make things fair I would run my Hilux in 4x2 as well ( as much as I could). There are many factors that affect the outcome of this test, types of tires, drivers, lines chosen and the list continues. Both bakkies are manual and both bakkies had the tires deflated to 1.5bar.

As seen in the video, the Amarok just performs better offroad in 4x2 merely due to the fact that the Amarok can engage diff lock and low range, where I, in the Hilux, can only engage those when I am in 4H. Yes, I could use more momentum, better lines, deflate tires, etc, but this was just a fun little test. My biggest downfall was the crossovers which caused the wheel to lose traction and ultimately causing me to not be able to conquer the obstacle.
