Tom Rowsell (Survive the Jive) joins Borja Vilallonga (aka the Modern Platonist) for a conversation on the intersection between Traditionalism and Paganism today. In this dialogue, we examine the historical views of Traditionalism on Paganism—in both René Guénon and Julius Evola, who held pretty different, even opposing, conceptions on polytheism. With Guénon’s specialism on Vedanta and, later in life, embracing Sufi Islam, the translation of Evola’s works into English has had a deeper impact in European Paganism. In some regards, Evola has become a beacon for the West, while Guénon has held a similar role for the East.

Together with the Comparativist school of Dumézil and Puvel, Traditionalism and its perennialist and antimodernist stances provide a notable hermeneutical basis to modern Paganism on how to understand and interact with modernity. He obtained his doctorate in history of religion from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris, France. He has devoted his research on the relationship between traditional religion and modernity.
