My MKT Sedalia Subdivision layout now has a “rival.” I'm not talking about a competitor, but my newest industry, Rival Manufacturing. Rival is a company known for its kitchen appliances things like Crock Pots, can openers, and meat slicers. It was one of the biggest employers in Sedalia through the 1980s, which is the timeframe I am modeling.

Rival also had a large plant down the line in Clinton. So, if you used Rival products in the 1970s and 1980s, the Katy likely played a part in getting those to you.

Along with the new industry, I’ve completed the basic work of this whole corner of the layout. Check out my previous update video here:    • Model Train Layout Update | New Expan...

I’ve constructed two new residential streets and crossings representing 19th St. and 14th. St. I have a little bit of landscaping done, with plenty more to go.

In this video, we run a quick operation featuring the Clinton Local and Sedalia Switcher. The local train is led by two GP40s. Check out this recent video I did showcasing those units:    • Wowed And Weathered! | Model Train Up...

I did my best to research the facility before by building my model. The prototype was demolished in recent years. However, the concrete foundation remains, revealing the exact dimensions of the structure. This building was interesting because of where the loading docks were located. The mainline curved along the side of the building but the spur came in on the opposite side of the facility. The building’s west side was built at an angle up against the curve in the Katy rightofway.

The west side of the facility was built diagonally following the curvature of the tracks. In real life, the mainline has an extremely broad curvature…with my layouts narrower 30degree radius I had to modify my west wall a bit to make everything fit. I used this flat wall on the backdrop to represent the southernmost portion of the facility.

With this project, I used “selective compression.” The real building was about 500 feet long. As you can imagine, that would have taken up a massive amount of real estate on the layout…and would have looked overpowering. My version is about half the size of the prototype. However, by using key features of the building, I’ve been able to create a very believable representation.

The spur to the Rival plant was the remnant of an old branchline of the Missouri Pacific, which originally served the facility. At some point before 1980, service was transferred to the Katy. Documentation from MKT company records and Missouri Department of Transportation from the early 1980s confirm Rival was an MKT customer. Images from the time period show the diamond also show a “new” turnout from the Katy main connecting with the former MoPac spur.

I won’t go into the long details about all the cutting and gluing. However, I wanted to fill you in on the basics. For the plant, I used Pikestuff’s Milton A Corporation Kit. This is the biggest kit offered by Pikestuff and it's basically a hodgepodge of pieces and shapes from most of its popular kits so you can kitbash whatever you need. Other Pikestuff kits i've done have had a square or rectangular footprint, …such as my Sutherlands hardware store. The Rival plant, with its unusual shape, was more of a challenge.

The Pikestuff kit represents a metal building, which works for half of my complex. The other half was built of cinder blocks. To replicate that, I used cinder block styrene sheets from JTT Scenery Products (JTT Patterned Plastic Concrete Block Accessory #97425) In the end, I painted the completed walls a light cream color to match that of the prototype.

I’m looking forward to having another industry on the layout. I’ve already started work on the next leg of the layout, which will have a grain elevator complex and a cement plant. So, I’ll have plenty or keep me busy on the Katy Sedalia sub.
