Training BJJ With a Torn Meniscus: My Advice To a Guy

Follow
Bulletproof For BJJ

BJJ is tough on the body. And it's made only tougher when we're carrying an injury...

The knees are one of the most common injury sites for BJJ players. Meniscus injuries are particularly prevalent in BJJ players (Joey has had a few of his own)

We have to acknowledge that choosing to train BJJ while carrying such any injury is a decision that only an individual can make. However, once the decision to continue has been made, what's the best way to go about it?

Can we change how we train so that the injury doesn't get worse?

What about positions... Are there ones to avoid?

Joey shares the advice he gave to a young man who is dealing with a torn meniscus and wants to continue to train BJJ.

Note: any advice given by JT and Joey is general, and is based on their own experience of injury and training BJJ. They are not a replacement for a trained medical professional, and as such ALWAYS recommend you seek one out for a proper diagnosis before listening to anyone else. We suggest you have a quality Physiotherapist you can consult with in such situations. Ideally they would have a good understanding of BJJ and it's demands.
