Trancoso is part of the Historical Villages group.
Trancoso is still today surrounded by walls, dating from the Dinisian period, with a beautiful medieval castle, crowning this majestic fortified complex. With its numerous monuments of civil and religious architecture, it is one of the most expressive Historic Centers in the country, visited annually by many thousands of people. The parish churches of Santa Maria and S. Pedro, the 16th century Casa dos Arcos, the Misericórdia Church, the Casa do Gato Preto, a curious building from the old Jewish Quarter and the Pelourinho, stand out among them all. beautiful piece of the purest Manueline style.
Trancoso is located 20km to the west of the Côa River, which represented the eastern border with the Kingdom of Leão. Hence its military importance. With the Alcanices treaty in 1297, the border crosses the Côa river to the east. The ribacôa plateau becomes definitively national territory and Almeida, to the west of Trancoso, becomes the defense front, together with other fortifications. From the century. XVII (War of Independence) it was decided to update and build the bastioned fortresses and Almeida's (as well as those of Elvas and Valença) became war machines. Trancoso lost its military importance, and during the French invasions it served only as a staging of troops and a rearguard to support Almeida. In the 19th century, its walls were partially dismantled, and reused for other constructions, but still remaining one of the best examples of Gothic urbanism, which has reached the present day in its entirety.
