Translating Haruki Murakami: A Discussion with Jay Rubin

WellesleyCollege

Jay Rubin speaks about the choices he makes in the process of translating the work of Haruki Murakami from Japanese into English. In particular, he elucidates the repeating motifs or tropes in Murakami's work that drive the translator to distraction. Rubin also addresses his reasons for retranslating Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World more than 30 years after it was first translated into English. In a wideranging discussion, Rubin and Newhouse Center Director Eve Zimmerman explore the perennial knotty questions about translation: how far is too far? When is far not far enough?
