Transpiration in Plants
What is transpiration?
Transpiration is the loss of water from a plant in the form of water vapor.
How does transpiration happen?
First, water is absorbed by the roots from the soil and will be transported to the stem then to the leaves. The water will be converted into gas through the process of evaporation. The leaves have small pores which allow the water to escape as vapor. These pores are called stomata. Their role is to let out water and breathe by exchanging gases.
This experiment shows that plants undergo transpiration. Transpiration is an invisible process. The moisture trapped inside the plastic bag is water vapor.
Why is transpiration important to plants?
1. It cools the plant. Transpiration gives a cooling effect to the body of plants.
2. It helps the plant to take up nutrients. Nutrients from the soil enter the plants through the roots to the other parts.
3. It allows gas exchange. Opening of stomata allows water vapor to leave and carbon dioxide to enter.
