In cases of transposition of the great arteries (aorta and pulmonary artery), these vessels are "transposed" from their normal position so that the aorta arises from the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery from the left ventricle. Transposition creates a situation where oxygenrich blood is pumped back to the lungs and oxygenpoor blood is pumped back to the body.
