The problem is that development has brought a high level of consumption and prices to Norway, making it one of the most expensive countries in the world to visit.
Norway has an excellent rail network that stretches from Kristiansand in the south to Bodø in the Arctic. The railway connects the main cities, and almost all lines pass through the capital.
Norway's extensive rail network spreads out in a fanshaped fashion from Oslo, which itself is connected by train to other Scandinavian capitals such as Stockholm and Copenhagen.
Norway is a coastal country, hence ferries and boats are one of the most important means of transport. Enjoying a walk in the sun on the deck while appreciating the wonderful landscapes is a good way to get to know this Nordic country.
Many ferries connect Norway with other European countries, including daily trips from Denmark, Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands.
All towns and cities in Norway have a bus transport service. A wide network across the country. Ecological vehicles, with panoramic views and equipped with comfortable seats, make traveling by bus in Norway also a pleasant option.
The car is probably the best means of transport to discover Norway at your own pace. But you have to take some factors into account.
Even though it is an oil country, the price of gasoline is around 2.50 euros per liter. The road is shared with cyclists and sometimes even pedestrians and that can be stressful.
On the other hand, the distances and road hours in Norway can be extensive because it is the longest country in Europe, after Russia. For example, from Kristiansand in the south, it takes about 30 hours to get to Hammerfest in the north.
With more than 50 airports, in Norway it is possible to reach even the northernmost towns of the country by plane. SAS, Norwegian, Flyr and Widerøe are the four largest national airlines.
All major cities and towns in Norway have airports that offer both domestic and international flights. In fact, there are more than 50 airports throughout the country that have regular routes, making it easy to reach the most remote destinations, such as the Lofoten Islands, North Cape or Svalbard.
But Norway is an expensive country. That is why some tips can be useful to reduce costs.
Buy train tickets in advance on the official website of the Norwegian railway company (NSB), the sooner you buy them, the cheaper they will be.
Reserve hotels as far in advance as possible, especially in the fjord area, either through booking, airbnb or similar applications.
Traveling in a group of 4 is cheaper than alone or as a couple. You will save a lot of money both in transportation with a convenient rental car, and in accommodation.
The weather is the last and the first thing to consider. If you come in winter, a coat according to temperatures below zero, a scarf, gloves and shoes or boots that protect from the cold.
In summer you can bring lighter clothes, but you should know that even summer evenings and nights can be cold, especially in mountain areas.
