STORYLINE:

The chief judge in the Saddam Hussein trial adjourned the session on Monday until December 5, to allow time to find replacements for two defence lawyers who were killed and another who fled the country after he was wounded.

Chief Judge Rizgar Mohammed Amin issued the order after the court reconvened following a lunch break as the trial resumed after a fiveweek break.

Mortar fire echoed before the session, which included the first testimony a videotaped statement from a witness who died weeks ago.

The former leader pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, torture, forced expulsions and illegal detentions at the opening session on October 19.

A moment of silence was observed on Monday in memory of the two recently assassinated defence lawyers, Saddam joined the other defendants in standing to read a prayer from the Quran.

Defence attorneys were on hand for the session, despite threats to boycott the hearing to protest against the government's alleged failure to protect them.
