The first storm of the Atlantic hurricane season came ashore this morning near Tampico, Mexico, with winds near 50 miles per hour (80kph). Most of the storm's convective storms and rainfall moved inland before the center, and the backside of the storm will contain mainly strong winds with little precipitation. Tropical Storm Warnings remain in effect in Mexico, with further rainfall accumulations of up to 8 inches (200mm) possible in Tamaulipas and Nuevo Leon. Alberto's circulation is already looking questionable, and is likely to devolve into a remnant low fairly soon.

Elsewhere, an area of interest is gathering pace northeast of the Bahamas, and a chance still remains for a brief spell as a tropical cyclone before ramming into the northeastern region of Florida.

Behind Alberto, another system could form in the same area with precursor rains over Central America. This system will have even less time to organise than Alberto had, and is likely to strike the same areas if it does become a tropical cyclone.

In the South China Sea, a large area of interest is expected to form, and could become a tropical cyclone at some point as it harasses the coast of Hainan and southern China.
