After continuous pressure from NATO allies, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada will meet the alliance’s benchmark on military defence spending as world leaders wrapped up their final day of the threeday summit.

Trudeau confirmed the federal government’s commitment to spend at least two per cent of Canada’s national gross domestic product on defence, but Trudeau says that target will be reached eight years from now.

Trudeau didn’t offer specific details on how Ottawa intends to get to hit that benchmark, just that it will happen by 2032. The NATO pact on defence spending at 2 per cent GDP was agreed upon back in 2014 and the prime minister says Canada has steadily increased military support since he was elected.

While Ottawa has increased its investments by 57 per cent since 2014 it is still lagging behind its NATO allies and currently spends 1.37 per cent of GDP. By 2030 that’s estimated to hit 1.76 per cent.

On Wednesday, Trudeau pledged an additional $500 million of aid to Ukraine. Meanwhile, as the summit wrapped up, leaders assured Ukraine a clear path to joining the alliance.

NATO security general Jens Stoltenberg said, “Ukraine, your future is with NATO. I welcome your progress on your forms and as you continue to do this important work, we will support you on your irreversible path to NATO membership.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, “First of all, we are very close to our ultimate goal here. The next meeting will be the proper invitation and after that will be membership. We will be with NATO as long as war in is Ukraine, but I hope we will prevail.

In the meantime, while embracing the current support it receives, Zelenskyy is pushing for military assistance to arrive faster and to lift restrictions on the use of U.S. weapons during its war with Russia.
