The Way We Wore

In this video Doris showcases some of her fabulous tulle dresses and gowns from YSL, Oscar de la Renta, Westwood, and other couture pieces from the 1950s. Tulle is a fabric that designers use frequently in their collections because it is easy to manipulate and layer. The fabric originated from Tulle, a city in France. It was woven in the 1700s, similar to how lace was made. The popularity and the accessibility of this fabric came in the mid1800s when the material could be manufactured.

Queen Victoria used tulle in her wedding dress, Worth used tulle for Empress Elizabeth of Austria sparking the romanticism that is now associated with the fabric. Besides royalty ballerina tutus are made from the light weight fabric. Tulle is still used today with designers like Giambattista, Molly Goddard, and Viktor & Rolf.
