In this lecture we discuss tumor suppressors, oncogenes and the principles of cancer biology as it relates to the USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK. We identify the differences between oncogenes and tumor suppressors. We will discuss the two hit hypothesis, familial cancer syndromes, somatic vs germline mutations, and specific mutations such as p53, APC, Ras, RET, BRCA, Her2 & more.
