The 1978 USAC season was the end of the Golden Era before the split which changed Indycar forever. Although tensions brewed behind the scenes, the Series had reached a highpoint in technology, drivers and races. This was the era of Bobby Unser, Tom Sneva, Mario Andretti (when he wasn't racing F1), Johnny Rutherford, Gordon Johncock, Al Unser, and rookie Rick Mears just to name a few. The Indy 500 was the crown jewel, but Pocono, Michigan, Ontario, Milwaukee and Trention all held their own. And for the first time the series ventured abroad and onto road circuits with racing at Canada’s Mosport, and over to Europe with races at Brands Hatch and Silverstone to show a new audience what the American Indycars were all about.
