Tutorial: Making grains for the Field Sweater - Mostly Knitting Podcast

Follow
Mostly Knitting

In this video I demonstrate how to create the grains for the Field Sweater how to make the grain and how to collapse it.
I demonstrate all 4 rounds that are involved in creating the grain.

I recommend:
1. Sharp tips for your needles
2. A cable needle that is substantially smaller than the needle you are knitting with for my actual sweater on the needles, my cable needle is 2.5mm and my knitting needle is 4mm
3. Make the grain quite loosely as it can be hard to collapse when you knit the 3 sts together if you dont.
4. Using some stitch markers. Even if you dont have stitch markers for every repeat, maybe have stitch markers separating every 3 or 4 repeats to prevent you from getting off track (or catch you before you get too far)
5. Coding some of the more complicated rows. For example, for Row 25 which is 6 lines of text long, I wrote it as C, Sl, C, K1, G, Sl, G, K1 the 2 C's are different but once I had done a few rows, i knew which one came first. But you could write one as C1B for cable 1 back and C1F for cable 1 front if you wanted. Anyway, I recommend coming up with a key that works for you and then using that for the rest of the yoke.

This is a paid pattern so i focus on the repeat for constructing the grain and don't share the numbers involved in the pattern. Hopefully just enough to help in the creation for someone who has already purchased the pattern.
