Two Democrats will go headtohead later this month to secure their party’s nomination for the Wake County sheriff’s race.

Incumbent Sheriff Gerald Baker and challenger Willie Rowe were the top finishers among seven in the May primary election. However, neither got 30% of the votes cast plus one, which is needed to win the nomination outright. Rowe got 29.4% of the vote while Baker got 24.06%.

The winner of the July 26 runoff will face Republican challenger Donnie Harrison in November.

WRAL News asked Baker if he was surprised about May's results.
