Qatar on Tuesday inaugurated its first solar power plant built by Chinese companies in the desert area about 80 kilometers west of the capital Doha.

The ceremony was attended by Qatar's Emir (head of state) Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, as well as Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani, among other senior officials.

The 800MW Al Kharsaah Solar Power Plant, with a total investment of 417 million US dollars, is the first nonfossil fuel power station in the country endowed with petroleum and natural gas and one of the largest in the Middle East. It's a milestone project for the country in energy transition.
Stretching some 10 square kilometers, the plant has installed around two million solar panels to turn the region's rich photothermal resources into electricity.

Started in July 2020, the project was undertaken by the joint venture formed by three Chinese enterprises, which were mainly responsible for installing photovoltaic brackets and components, as well as building stepup substations and grid connection stations.

Thanks to technological innovation, Chinese companies also managed to expand the plant's electricity generation capacity by 20 percent by using automated robotic arms to clean the panels.
