Synovial joints are freely mobile joints in which the articulating surfaces have no direct contact with each other.
There a 6 types of synovial joints, and today we're taking a closer look at the ball and socket joint.
The ball and socket joint has a ballshaped surface of one rounded bone that fits into a cuplike depression of another bone.
The distal bone can move around in several axes with one common center, enabling the joint to move in many directions.

A great example is the hip joint
The round head of the femur (ball) rests in the cuplike acetabulum (socket) of the pelvis.
It's highly mobile due to its structure and can perform many actions in different planes:
1⃣ Flexionextension
2⃣ Internal/external rotation
3⃣ Adductionabduction
And it can also combine up to 3 different actions at the same time.
This variety of movement allows us to use our legs during daily activities in an ideal manner.
