What is Poetry?
Special kind of writing in which descriptive language is used to create images or feelings. It appeals to the emotions, the senses or the imagination of the reader.

Tips to Understand Poetry
1.Read the title of the poem.
2.Read the poem at least twice.
3.Visualize the poem as a scene in your head, and place yourself in the scene.
4.Identify the mood of the poem, or how it makes you feel.
5.Identify the words or phrases in the poem that make you feel this way.

Terms
Figurative Language use of ordinary words in extraordinary ways
Rhyme = ending sound
Rhythm (meter) = beat
Exaggeration (hyperbole) the stars of the night are close enough to touch; her smile was a mile wide
Personification the trees danced in the wind; Opportunity was knocking at the door
Simile comparison using like or as; my love is like a rose; your eyes are like sunshine!
Metaphor comparison that does NOT use like or as; winter is an ice cream sunday; you are my sunshine
Onomatopoeia – formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named
