Hello this is Dr. Grant Cooper from Princeton Spine and Joint Center. A few days ago, I was explaining degenerative joint disease to a patient in my office and when I was done, the patient said to me that he thought I should make what I had just told him into a YouTube video because he said that for the first time he understood why his right knee was hurting him and not his left knee even though an xray had shown that both of his knees were filled with arthritis.

Chapter 1: Understanding Degenerative Joint Disease
Definition and synonyms of degenerative joint disease
Most commonly affected joints (knees and hips)
Other common joints affected (hands, spine, shoulders, elbows, ankles, and toes)

Chapter 2: The Role of Cartilage in Degenerative Joint Disease
Explanation of cartilage in joints
Comparison of cartilage to a sponge and its function
Impact of joint movement and load on cartilage

Chapter 3: The Progression of Degenerative Joint Disease
Breakdown and loss of cartilage
Effects on the subchondral bone, bone spurs, and cysts
Inflammatory response and impact on soft tissue

Chapter 4: Radiographic Evidence of Degenerative Joint Disease
Explanation that everyone will develop degenerative joint disease with age
Prevalence of knee and facet joint arthritis with age
Importance of distinguishing between radiographic evidence and symptoms

Chapter 5: The Role of Inflammation in Causing Pain
Explanation that pain is not directly caused by degenerative joint disease itself
The body's inflammatory response as a contributing factor to pain
Importance of addressing inflammation in treatment

Chapter 6: Treating Degenerative Joint Disease
Focus on eliminating inflammation and changing biomechanics
Importance of muscle support and stability for joint health
Recommended exercises for knee osteoarthritis prevention

Chapter 7: Treatment Options: Steroid Injections
Explanation of steroid injections for reducing inflammation
Duration of effectiveness and limitations of steroid injections
Need for additional steps to address biomechanics

Chapter 8: Treatment Options: Viscosupplementation
Introduction to viscosupplementation injections (hyaluronic acid)
Replacing joint fluid and providing lubrication
Window of opportunity for addressing biomechanics during injection series

Chapter 9: Other Nonsurgical Options
Liquid NSAID injections (toradol) as an antiinflammatory alternative
Regenerative medicine techniques like PRP, prolotherapy, amniotic fluid, and stem cells
Promising nature of these techniques but not yet standard of care or covered by insurance

Chapter 10: Surgical Options
Consideration of surgery for severe and debilitating symptoms
Hip and knee joint replacements as lifechanging surgeries
Advances in surgical techniques and anesthesia
