Winfried Randerath, MD, FCCP, Centre of Sleep Medicine and Respiratory Care, Bethanien Hospital, University of Cologne, Solingen, Germany, discusses central sleep apnea (CSA), highlighting its distinction from obstructive sleep apnea, which is primarily caused by upper airway obstruction during sleep. He explains that CSA is a disorder of breathing regulation caused by dysfunctions in the brain's impulse to breathe or stop breathing. Prof. Randerath emphasizes the impact of CSA on various underlying conditions, particularly cardiovascular diseases. This interview took place at the Sleep Europe 2024 congress in Seville, Spain.
