Using a palette knife will change the way you paint. As simple as that. It won't allow you to get down into detail. Allow yourself to be expressive, rather than overly descriptive. I promise you, you'll have a great time once you get into it. You WILL use a lot more paint! Do let me know how you get on in the comments...
