Utilizing diagonal lines in composition dates back to Renaissance painting. This technique not only added a dramatic quality to their works but also helped to draw the viewer's eye across the canvas, enhancing the narrative and emotional impact of the painting. Artists can infuse their work with movement, energy, and dynamism through the use of diagonal lines and brush strokes. These lines also effectively guide the viewer's attention to the focal point.

In this stepbystep tutorial, I demonstrate how diagonals were employed in a Botticelli painting and in my own paintings. Hopefully afterwards you will feel inspired to use more of these lines in your artwork!.
