Unrivaled Influence: The Douglas DC-3's Impact on Aviation

The Antique Airshow

There are very few aircraft that have had the impact on history that the Douglas DC3 has had. Beginning as a development of the highly successful DC2, the DC3 is said to be the first commercial aircraft to be able to make a profit without relying on government subsidies. It was a rugged, reliable aircraft that could take more people, further distance, faster. When the Second World War broke out the DC3 was the best airliner in the world. With the outbreak of WW2 militaries around the world began pressing DC3s into service. It wouldn’t be long until a military version was created in the form of the C47/C53. Utilized in a wide variety of roles it would provide the backbone for much of the Allied war effort. Postwar, the C47 would soldier on in many air forces around the world for many years. With the U.S it saw additional service in Korea and Vietnam. It also resumed life as an airliner where it was slowly phased out. In total more than 10,600 were built of which over 10,200 were C47/C53s.
