Unveiling Genshai: The Secret Weapon Of Elite Leaders

Ben Ward Leadership

Over the years building and leading teams, the most valuable principle I’ve ever learned that sets a team apart and sets them up for long term success can be summed up in one word. It’s an ancient Hindi word, called Genshai, which means to never treat another person in a manor that would make them feel small including yourself.

Now Genshai is not about the things you say or even how you say them. It’s not about saying the right things—it’s not even the things you do or how you do them it’s not in the technique. Genshai is not a tactic to use on people. It’s deeper than behavior. (the things you say or do)

Back to it...

Genshai is a way of being, a way of seeing, a way of serving. The difference maker is the orientation of your heart. Now I’m going to give examples of what I mean in this video as well as the next couple videos. Fir my star wars and mandaloreaon fans, “This is the way” If you know, you know, lol.

But Genshai is the vibe you give off, the feeling you bring into a room. It's caring and seeing people in a way that makes them feel valued and seen by you. I love what Bono said… “It has been said that after meeting with the great British Prime Minister William Gladstone, you left feeling he was the smartest person in the world, but after meeting with his rival Benjamin Disraeli, you left thinking you were the smartest person.

Do the people you serve day in and day out feel seen by you? In your presence, do they feel like they matter. Genshai is a challenge to ‘Be somebody that makes everybody feel like somebody.’

Story of Doug Johnson Doug gave me this gift. The gift of Genshai. He treated me big, he didn't treat me small. And in his presence, how did I show up? I showed up big. When Doug Johnson showed up to my baseball games, I would see him in the stands and say to myself, Doug’s here, and I played better. I felt more confident, made less errors on the field and got more hits.

I challenge you to give this gift to an important person in your life today. Put the practice of Genshai into practice right away. In fact, who in your life either personally or professionally would benefit from the gift of Genshai from you? Think of someone right now!

Give them a name and a reputation to live up to, and then help them along the way to grow into these shoes. Now I’m not talking about falsely propping people up. I’m talking about genuinely finding the good in people, what can you can appreciate about them, and then let them feel that from you.

I felt seen by Doug, I felt like I mattered to him. He treated me bigger than I was, and with respect. And because of this, he lifted me up to become a better person.

Now there are three laws to unlock the power Genshai, to put it into action.
1st. Treat people Big (Like Doug Johnson Treated me)

2nd. Big doesn’t mean soft. I’m not talking about falsely propping everyone up all the time. We need to have the difficult conversations when necessary, and not be afraid to have them.

3rd. You want to be Soft like a Brick!
Soft, they need to know you care. The Brick! Being willing and skilled to have the needed hard conversations. We will talk more about this over the coming months and years as we grow together.

I challenge you to become a Genshai Warrior.

Treat others around you BIG. Never treat a person in a manner that would make them feel small. Including yourself!

But remember this is something we are striving for, nobody is gong to be perfect at this, and it’s been said that “striving can be more important than arriving, if you’re striving day to day with the wisest use of your time and energy to reach a realistic goal, you are a success.” So don’t be too hard on yourself, and do your best, striving for these ideals.
