The United States has sent an aircraft carrier and its powerful air and naval strike group to Israel.


This move is in support of Israel in the ongoing conflict with Gaza, triggered by Hamas's attack on Israeli territory. The Pentagon announced that the U.S. Navy's aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford, along with the guidedmissile cruiser USS Normandy and guidedmissile destroyers Thomas Hudner, USS Ramage, USS Carney, and USS Roosevelt, have been mobilized to the eastern Mediterranean.



U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin stated that the U.S. would provide additional support to the Israeli military, including equipment, resources, and ammunition in the coming days. President Joe Biden assured Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a Sunday call that additional U.S. assistance was on its way.


The conflict has resulted in over a thousand casualties in Israel, with ground, sea, and air attacks by the Hamas Islamist group catching the country off guard. This marks a national tragedy for Israel, experiencing such a high number of fatalities in just over a day, unlike anything in its history since its establishment in 1948, despite numerous past armed conflicts.


On the Palestinian side, Israeli airstrikes on Gaza have led to at least 413 deaths and over 2,300 injuries.
