On September Thirteenth, Nineteen fortyfour, the USS Warrington, A Somersclass destroyer, was hit by the Great Atlantic hurricane off the Bahamas. Despite the exhaustive efforts of the crew to salvage the situation, the destroyer eventually sank, leaving only seventythree out of the three hundred and twentyone crew members alive. This is one of the few occasions when massive waves have caused heavy damage or total destruction to the elite US Destroyer ships.
