The Kennedy family gathered on Cape Cod Thursday for the burial at sea of John F. Kennedy Junior, whose body was found in the sunken fuselage of his plane near those of his wife and sisterinlaw.

The burial, the latest step in a tragedy that has gripped the nation for nearly a week, is to be held Thursday morning from the USS Briscoe.

The USS Briscoe, which had been conducting training near Virginia, was sent to Massachusetts to pick up family members for the burial ceremony.

The ashes of all three victims were reportedly scattered at sea.

To keep television cameras away, flights were banned within five miles of the recovery effort led by the USS Grasp, a Navy salvage ship.

Senator Edward M. Kennedy and his sons, Patrick and Edward Jr., were aboard the Grasp when the bodies were recovered and accompanied the remains to Woods Hole.

The victims' families endured a fiveday vigil before the bodies were brought to Cape Cod on Wednesday night for autopsies.

An invitationonly service for Kennedy's sisterinlaw is planned for Saturday night at Christ Church, an Episcopal church in Greenwich, Connecticut.

New York's Irish community also planned a public ceremony tonight at Old St. Patrick's Cathedral in downtown Manhattan.

A private Mass for Kennedy and his wife is scheduled for Friday morning at the Church of St. Thomas More, a Roman Catholic church in New York once attended by his mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

President Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton are expected to attend.
