During their exile, Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana encounter the demon Viradha in the Dandaka forest. Viradha was actually a cursed Gandharva named Tumburu, who was cursed by Kubera to become a demon due to his arrogance. He was freed from the curse by Rama's touch. However, Viradha, now freed from his curse, was still intent on doing harm. Viradha attacks Rama with the intention of kidnapping Sita. A fierce battle ensues between Rama, Lakshmana, and Viradha. With the help of Lakshmana, Rama defeats Viradha and kills him.
